A 21 year old man was arrested in Sydney suburb of Riverwood and charged with three terrorism offences. This is the eighteenth terror raid in Australia.

Other acts done in preparation for, or planning, terrorist acts contrary to section 101.6 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is life imprisonment.

Membership of a terrorist organisation, contrary to section 102.3 of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is 10 years imprisonment.

Advocating terrorism, contrary to section 80.2C(1) of the Criminal Code Act 1995 (Cth). The maximum penalty for this offence is five years imprisonment.

The man is alleged to have attempted to recruit other teens through the posting of terror related material on social media platforms. It is also alleged the man downloaded a dossier about weapons and tactics used in terror events and swore allegiance to Islamic State.

“I think it’s fair to categorise him as encouraging other individuals, young individuals … as pledging allegiance to ISIS,” Australian Federal Police Assistant Commissioner Ian McCartney said on Wednesday. (SMH)

“It will be alleged in court that the man created and posted increasingly extremist material on social media, and downloaded a document on basic weapons and tactics that police allege could be used to facilitate a terrorist act. It will further be alleged he actively attempted to influence teenagers to adopt and act upon his extremist views” (AFP)

Bail was refused and will next appear at Parramatta Local Court tomorrow (Thursday 5 December 2019)
