A homeless addict set ablaze during a horrifying, caught-on-camera attack inside a Lower East Side NYCHA building has died, authorities said Saturday.

The victim, whom officials have yet to identify and is known only as John Doe, died at New York Presbyterian Hospital/Weill Cornell Medical Center burn unit Thursday after clinging to life for 13 days.

The man, who is believed to be in his 30s and regularly slept in hallways and stairwells of the Samuel Gompers Houses building on Pitt St., was set on fire as he dozed on a third-floor landing about 4:50 p.m. Nov. 5th 2021.

The vehicle hit more than 20 people. 11 adults and 12 children to nearby hospitals after the incident.

A registered sex offender in Nevada and had an active arrest warrant in that state, court records show.He was also released on bond this month after allegedly running over a woman who said she’s the mother of his child earlier this month, according to court documents.

The Arrest

Brooks was just 11 years old when he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and depression while growing up in inner-city Milwaukee without his father, court records show

He was admitted to a mental hospital at 12 and attempted suicide numerous times in his early years after losing his grandmother and watching his father abuse his mother, papers say. 

“I didn’t have a father growing up, so my mum was stuck raising me and my older sister. We were on welfare for most of my childhood,” Brooks wrote in a 2007 letter to a judge

“My father was an alcoholic who was very abusive to my mum. My father’s dad was also an alcoholic.
